Brief description: CALL (Communication, Access, Literacy and Learning) Scotland provides services and carries out research and development projects for people with severe communication disabilities, their families and people who work with them in augmentative communication and specialised computer use.
- Assessment & Support Service – Children with complex communication support needs can be referred through schools and education authorities. CALL will assess children in school, and offer recommendations for equipment and approaches, equipment loan, and advice, training and support for staff and families. A small number of assessments are free, but mostly these are funded through ‘service level agreements’.
- Information Services – CALL provides information and advice in response to general enquiries on communication technology for people with disabilities. CALL has an open-access reference library.
- Loan Bank – CALL offers loans of specialist equipment for communication and learning, to allow for extended assessment and evaluation of a device or system before purchase. Technical support is available.
- Training & Staff Development – CALL offers a range of training and CPD relevant to people working with children and adults.

Who is served: Anyone from any of the Scottish NHS health boards except Lothian, Fife, Orkney or Shetland.
Brief description: The Scottish Centre of Technology for the Communication Impaired (SCTCI) exists to provide a high quality tertiary level of AAC service to people referred to SCTCI from 10 of the 14 NHS Boards in Scotland: Ayrshire and Arran; Borders; Dumfries and Galloway; Forth Valley; Grampian; Greater Glasgow and Clyde; Highland; Lanarkshire; Tayside; and the Western Isles. SCTCI staff work throughout Scotland with both children and adults who have significant limitations to their ability to communicate through speech. Our aim is to help to improve an individual’s communication opportunities through the use of AAC. We do this by: (1) providing an independent assessment service on an outreach basis for people living in Scotland who may benefit from some form of AAC. (2) training and education (3) being available for telephone advice and consultation (4) being involved in research and development (5) having a library of resource materials
